Star employee profile: Stephen Wang, Aged Care Worker and 2022 St Basil’s Miranda Consumer Choice Employee of the Year

Stephen has worked at St Basil’s Miranda for five years where he did his work placement, and ever since has learnt and grown in leaps and bounds. So much so that last year he was voted the St Basil’s Miranda Consumer Choice Employee of the Year.

Stephen works as Aged Care Worker at St Basil’s Miranda in Sydney’s south where he supports residents with their daily care needs, and describes himself as a self-driven person, who is motivated to achieve his goals in the workplace.

“When I came to Australia I had a goal to improve my verbal communication in the English language,” explains Stephen.

“After being in Australia for a couple of years, I started working in aged care which helped me to practice speaking English with residents while I was learning at TAFE.”

Stephen shares that one of the most enjoyable part of working in aged care is hearing the life stories of residents.

“I enjoy helping residents and learning from them through their life stories. I have built a strong rapport with residents.”

“Working in aged care has also taught me to practice patience.”

Stephen worked as an Engineer for 20 years in China before joining the aged care industry in Australia and is very happy with his career change.

“I am very grateful for receiving my start in aged care at St Basil’s Miranda. The advice that he would give to any new starters in aged care is to look after themselves so they can look after residents, plus they must practice good manual handling so that they can be a good mentor and role model to other new starters.”

“It was a big honour for me to receive the Consumer Choice Employee of the Year award. It especially inspired me a lot knowing that residents and their families voted for me because of their direct experience and my interactions with me,” says Stephen.

One piece of advice that Stephen has followed throughout his life and wants to share with everyone is that ‘everything you do depends on your attitude’.
