Star employee profile: Anushka Dahal

 

Anushka Dahal is the Senior Leisure and Lifestyle Officer at St Basil’s Lakemba and is in her second year in the aged care industry.

 

With an educational background of Social Work, it has always been important to Anushka that she work to support people.

 

“My team and I focus on providing residents with services that support daily living and promote social connection, good physical and mental health, and all-round wellbeing,” explains Anushka.

 

“We also aim to implement ideas that residents and their families may have as best we can to bring them joy.”

 

“Having a multicultural background myself and being someone who loves to help people, what I love most about working at St Basil’s is that I have the honour of supporting residents who also have a diverse background.”

Anushka is very passionate about the wellbeing of residents.

“I like how residents here acknowledge even our smallest efforts to make their lives in an aged care fulfilling. It truly means a lot and makes it even more worthwhile.  I love to listen to any feedback they have about the leisure and lifestyle activities after they participate”.

 

All staff at St Basil’s aim to offer consumers choices and respect the decisions that they make on their behalf.

Anushka explains, “We offer each resident options and choices to ensure that they can maintain their rights to make their own decisions.  We also aim to implement ideas and services in cooperation with residents rather than simply what we think they want. Overall, the leisure and lifestyle department focus on giving residents services and support for daily living that are important for their health and wellbeing.”

The advice that Anushka gives to those considering working in aged care – “If someone is considering a career in aged care I would say that it can be challenging but equally rewarding.”

“To care for people is not an easy task, one needs to have empathy, patience and enthusiasm. If one does not have these qualities, it’s very hard to work in my kind of role.”
